Welcome to this review of the Zojirushi EC-BD15BA. What I would like to do with this review is introduce the key issues that affect this machine, both positive and negative and hopefully give you an unbiased balanced view of this coffee maker.

The heating element on this machine really is top draw, and while you might question why I would begin the review with something seemingly secondary in importance, this is something that we all need to be aware I think. The heating element holds the temperature perfectly throughout the entire brewing process, this allows for a consistently great coffee flavor.

One negative I should mention next is the fact that the tube that runs from the heating element to the shower head that dispenses water over the coffee grinds runs directly through the water reservoir. This is potentially quite a dangerous thing, when the water is heated to just the right temperature for brewing, then it is essentially cooled down by travelling through a tank full of cold water sporadic results will most likely ensue. I think as long as you’re careful not to use chilled water when you fill the water reservoir there shouldn’t be a problem.

A really big plus that the Zojirushi comes with is the thermal carafe. I personally am I huge fan of thermal carafes, and while I can see some positives in using the glass type with heating plate I think the facts do favor this type of carafe. The thermal carafe is ideal if you want to keep your coffee hot and keep the taste as fresh as possible, while it might not stay hot for 10 hours, it should be plenty hot enough for the time it takes for even 1 person to drink a pot of coffee. The glass carafes while they have a fast pour rate that we are all used to doesn’t do the flavor of the coffee any favors at all, and within just a few minutes after brewing the taste will have that horrible burnt taste.

The water dispensing with this machine is also stand out. I can’t count the number of machines that come up short on this particular issue. For those of you aren’t that familiar with how the water is applied to the coffee, there are currently 2 different dispersion methods, a stream and a shower head method. As you might imagine the stream just pours a stream of water onto the coffee and we usually end up with a ring of coffee that doesn’t get water applied to it. And even with some shower head models we still have this ring of untouched coffee. Not with the Zojirushi however, practically every last ground is saturated so we get all the flavor out of the coffee.
